Work
I am working within the tradition of painting, extending the expressive grammar and vocabulary of that ever evolving visual language.
This body of work explores the blurry terrain between the physical and virtual worlds we simultaneously inhabit. The interplay of these realms is made palpable as physical material is confused with digital representation and distortion: A piece of fabric melds into a its digital doppelganger; a torn page is confused with an image of ripped paper, illusions of three dimensions are intermingled with actual depth. All of this is woven into multilayered compositions I have constructed in a way that is loosely parallel to musical composition.

My studio/gallery in Guerneville California showing a few of the works highlighted below.

This was the breakthrough piece. Illusions and displacements are woven into a strong structure It has visual rhythm, motion and depth.

Twp details showing the semi sculptural effect. The metaphor of being "torn up" seems to resonate.

Sweetheart
8'X8'
Sculpted Ink jet prints on paper and silk, oil stick, ink, fabric
2025
The muted tones of this piece allow for a complexity that would otherwise be overwhelming. It plays out in an a mixture of real and illusional depth. The layers of materials amount to about an inch of depth. "Real" shadows interplay with replicas. This piece was intentionally composed of the sorts of rhythms, repetitions and variations characteristic of musical composition. Strong large scale structure contains and controls the smaller patterns and movements. It was made in the aftershock of the suicide of a very close friend and is dedicated to him.

This piece began as an attempt to make small improvements in Fall Orchestra I for its inclusion in a show of the Weber Collection at the Katzen Center for the Arts in Washington DC. The process very soon developed a life of it's own.

Illusions are woven into almost all of my work in one form or another. In this case it's a pretty straight forward play. In other cases the illusions are woven into more complex metaphorical composItions. For me uncertainty is fundamental.
